BY WEEKLY presents: Emmy Zwagers – Come together in a dream

Period: 15/02 – 24/02/2019
Opening: Sat 16/02 at 17:00
Open: Fri./ Sat./ Sun. 12:00-17:00

Starting from dreams and visions and an interest in science, Emmy constructs a physical and personal relationship with formal images. Through series making and repetitive activity in this mostly process based practice, she uses different sets of tools, materials and activity: hands, body, a broom, oil, spray paint, hair, paper and polymer. Ultimately, longing for a feeling of connectedness through her flats and objects, the works come together in a paintlike installation.

Emmy Zwagers (1989, Oosterhout) works as multidisciplinary artist currently based in Den Bosch. She studied at AKV St. Joost, Den Bosch and Camberwell College of Arts, London, UK. Her work has been showcased at exhibitions at a.o. CGP London, London and Dutch Design Week.

BY WEEKLY is a platform presenting and curating work by students and young artists – as a pop-up exhibition twice a month on various locations. This is the first time to co-host and exhibtion with XPO.

Anna Cherednikova – Wild Garden

Opening: 29/11/2018, 17:00
Period: 29/11/2018 – 9/12/2018
Open: Fri., Sat., Sun. 12:00-17:00
Location: XPO, Stroinksbleekweg 2, 7523 ZL Enschede, Netherlands

How is a garden made?

We consider a garden, as a determined place, where different forms of life mix, adapt and coexist. Constant migration of the plants and species, the present of human intervention everywhere in the nature, makes the borders of the garden are flexible and everything which is inside connects and influences with that what is outside.

Let’s question the way we see a garden and represent it, what we actually define today as a garden, what we protect and put behind the gardens fence and what happens outside.

Anna Cherednikova is a conceptual photographer currently working between Spain and France. Her research centers on the relationship between people and nature, and she works with temporality as central aspect of her practice. MFA from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Complutense University, Madrid and participant in varies residencies with the most recent one at l’École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d’Arles. Anna has received grants from the European Commission and the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Education. Her artworks have been exhibited in Spain, Portugal, Italy and France.

Maarten van Aken – Window of Perception

[EN] (Nederlands verder naar beneden)
Opening: 13/09/2018 – 17:00-19:00
Period: 13/09 – 23/09/2019
Open: Fr./ Sat./ Sun. 12:00-17:00
Location: Stroinksbleekweg 2, 7523 ZL, Enschede (NL)

During the opening, Maarten will enter into dialogue with architect Nick Albers about his work and process. They will talk about maartens work and proces now, in china and in the future.

Maarten van Aken is fascinated by the interrelationship between architecture, light and humans. People are rarely seen but their traces can be seen.

Powerful light defines space and intersections. A window is an intersection, a gateway, like a painting can be.

Such an intersection can be called a liminal space. A liminal space is the time between ‘what was’ and the ‘next’. It is a place of transition, yet time seems to stand still. In this place we can play with perception.

In October 2017 Maarten van Aken was an artist in residence in Dalian(China). The language barrier enforced to be silence, to listen, to observe. This resulted in a mindset of “living in the moment” and the focus shifted towards the light on unconventional combinations in local architecture.

The works in this exhibition are an attempt at capturing these moments and to build a bridge between inside and out, China and Netherlands and the physical and imaginary space.

This exhibition is a result from the warm cooperation between the city of Enschede, Dalian Zhongshan Art museum (China) and ARE (Artist Residencies Enschede

[NL] Venster van perceptie

Opening: 13/09/2018 – 17:00-19:00
Periode: 13/09 – 23/09/2019
Open: vr./ za./ zo. 12:00-17:00
Locatie: Stroinksbleekweg 2, 7523 ZL, Enschede (NL)

Weng Daosheng – 象外 – Beyond images

Opening: 31/07/2018 17:00 (Tuesday)
Period: 31/07 – 11/08/2018
Open: Fri./Sat./Sun. 12:00-17:00
Location: Stroinksbleekweg 2, 7523ZL Enschede, Netherlands

Speaking in the language of painting, Weng Daosheng represents a world beyond images. A visual language derived from the figurative and reality, where the eternal things you are deliberately looking for in reality are not found. And perhaps are elevated to an ideology.
Beyond images shows the performance in the world of the mind, although it seems like concrete images, it emerged from the abstract. Beyond images.

This exhibition is a result from the warm cooperation between the city of Enschede, Dalian Zhongshan Art museum (China) and ARE (Artist Residencies Enschede). Weng Daosheng has been invited by Cheng Liang, curator of Dalian Zhongshan Art museum, to participate in the exchange program between Dalian and Enschede. He has been living and working at the ARE studio at art initiative B93 for several weeks and concludes this period with an exhibition.

Debbie Voerman – ‘Zelfbeeld’

Period: 29/06 – 08/07/2018
Open: Fri./Sat./Sun. 12:00-17:00

I’m nobody, like me.
nobody likes me..
there’s nobody like me…

In the ‘selfie culture’ within online media, self-image and external appreciation are intimately entwined. ‘Likes’ determine how a ‘nobody’ becomes someone and someone becomes nobody.

Debbie translates images from online media to self-portraits on canvas – and back again to social media via photos – where they become subject to the same system. During her Artist-in-residence period In 2017 in Spain Debbie explored how to break that circle.

Only focus on image.
In the end, everyone is unique

Willemijn Calis – China Dreams

Opening: 05/04/2018 at 17:00
Period: 05/04 – 15/04/2018
Open: Fri./Sat./Sun. 12:00-17:00

Willemijn about her work:
‘The night has always fascinated me, at night the world presents itself to us in a different way. Covered by a blanket of darkness there seems to emerge more space for things, our mind seems to get the chance to open itself more. And out of a seemingly endless reservoir, things that can’t stand the daylight such as fears, memories and obsessions float towards the surface.
I invite you all to wander around in my Chinese dreams, and maybe even see something of yourself reflected in them.

What you will see here is the result of the working period in The Dalian Zhongshan Art Museum in Dalian, China.’

The artist exchange program is a result of the warm cooperation between the city of Enschede, Dalian Zhongshan Art museum (China) and ARE (Artist Residencies Enschede).

Christian Nicolay – NoWhere NowHere

From the 15th of March XPO shows the exhibition ‘NoWhere NowHere’ by ARE (Artist Residencies Enschede) guest Christian Nicolay.

Opening: 15/03/2018 at 17:00
Period: 15/03 – 25/03/2018

1. relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.
2. occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold.
3. liminal symbols of passage and transformation; doors, ladders, crossings, bridges, pallets.

NoWhere NowHere explores current issues of globalization and climate change through the lens of the liminal – a place betwixt and between. Materials, images and objects reflect the concepts of liminality to visually demonstrate transition and transformation – the visible and the invisible. In the exhibition the notion of ‘space’ and ‘place’ occurs in conjunction with ideas of the ‘temporary’ and ‘permanent’ creating a play between the seen and unseen – the NoWhere and the NowHere.
